Writely - Whats Wrong?

July 27th, 2006 | Joel | Web Services

I have been told that Writely has once again closed down registration. Apparently when you try to register for an account, it just adds you to a waiting list. I am not sure what caused Writely to close down registration but I fired off an email to them about the problem. Hopefully they will reply with some useful information. In any case, I will post any information about registration as soon as I hear about it. And for those of you who just can not wait for registrations to reopen, leave me a comment with a valid email address, your email will not show to the public, and I will fire off an invite to you. I am not sure how many invites I have so first come first serve. In any case, when I run out of invites you guys can continue to invite each other.

It is so strange: In the early morning I opened up Writely’s Homepage and they suddenly seemed to allow public registrations again — now at 3:30pm EST they turned this off again. What is wrong with them? Do they want to check and see if they can handle the traffic they’d be facing if it was open to public?

To those of you who do not have an account with Writely yet: There is no evidence that anything has changed to Google style so it is the way it used to be. Even though Google keeps secrets pretty well usually, it won’t take them to much time until they’ll finally launch Writely as their online ‘pendant’ to their exisiting spreadsheet application.

Received word from them today. They said to keep track of http://writely.blogspot.com/ and http://groups.google.com/group/Writely-Discussion-Group for more information on public registration. :\
