Peerflix

Peerflix is very much like lala.com (Read more about lala.com here) but rather then trading CDs, you trade DVDs. Users sign up and are able to trade their DVDs for DVDs that they want. The more DVDs that you send to others, the more flixbuxs that you accumulate which you then use to request DVDs. Think of flixbuxs as credits. The average cost of a DVD is about 2 flixbuxs. What happens if you don’t want to trade your DVDs? Well, you also have the option of buying flixbuxs.

As of this writing, flixbux’s price ranges are as noted below. Keep in mind that the price range may change without notice, make sure to consult peerflix.com.

  • 1 peerbux $5
  • 5 peerbux $20
  • 30 peerbux $99

Personally, I do not see my self using this service very much. When I buy DVDs, I buy DVDs that I want to keep. And with other services out there like Blockbuster and Netflix, why would I want to waste my time trying to find someone who is willing to trade with me? If I want to see a movie, I would want to see it right away. On the other hand, people who have a large collection of DVDs that they do not watch anymore will love this service. Being able to trade DVDs that is collecting dust in a box for DVDs that they would like to have would save them a bundle of cash.

Just stumbled upon your blog from TechCrunch and wanted to contribute. I’m the Director of Marketing at Peerflix. You hit the nail on the head with the last part of your post. We’re a great option for people that have DVDs they no longer watch…our research shows that most people watch purchased DVDs no more than two times. When you’re talking about a DVD purchase market that is 4x the rental market, you can see that there’s a lot of unwatched movies laying around. We’re adding new members and inventory every day, so let me know if you want to give it a shot.

Thank you for taking your time to comment. That is pretty interesting statistics, now I wonder what is the figure for unwanted VHS movies like. :)

I am currently enrolled with peerflix but I have nothing to trade yet. Maybe I will pass by the local flea market and pick up a flick.
